Mike Campbell--vocal teacher

Lessons and Workshops

"I want to challenge my students to dig deeper...
deeper than they think they can."

Mike Campbell is an inspiring, supportive singing teacher and vocal coach. You can work with him one-on-one in his own studio, or attend his weekly group performance workshops.

Private Lessons

Singing lessons run a full hour, and cover both vocal technique and performance. You'll learn the discipline of technique, and how to expand and protect your instrument. You'll also learn how to apply that technique to the singing and performance of songs.

The typical lesson begins with six basic warm-up exercises, during which you'll work on proper support and vowel production. Then you'll sing a song--usually of your choice, sometimes Mike's--and apply the technique. You'll also discuss the interpretation and phrasing of the song, because Mike believes that singing is not just about technique. It's ultimately about making music: one singer can have magnificent technique yet be an average singer, while another can have less than perfect technique and be a true artist. He believes we should sing like we speak, naturally.

"I believe style comes from your heart. Your heart will direct you. If you love R&B, and you listen to it, and you drown yourself in R&B, chances are you're going to be an R&B singer. We all have our own styles that reflect the music we love. I work with all styles."

Performance Workshops

Mike's group performance workshop is about communication with the audience, commitment to the lyrics of a song, and the discovery of who you are on stage. You don't need stage experience to attend.

For each class, you'll prepare a song. During class, you'll "talk the tune down" with the pianist, then perform it for Mike and the other singers in attendance. All will participate in a constructive group critique, you'll perform again, and be critiqued again. Your objective is to convey the emotion and story of the song--to be in the moment and apply that within your craft. You'll leave class with a critique you can take home and use in developing your material.

"I find it really fulfilling, working with somebody who's going after a dream...trying to help them get through the process."
